Clearing customs

Before you leave the US

  1. Paperwork for people: a passport for everyone aboard. US citizens need no visa for stays of up to 90 days [9]. The old Bahamas Travel Health Visa and COVID testing requirements are gone [10].
  2. Pilot documents: pilot certificate with English proficiency, medical (AOPA notes BasicMed is accepted), and a restricted radiotelephone operator permit. If you don't own the aircraft, carry a letter of authorization [3].
  3. Aircraft documents and gear: airworthiness certificate, permanent registration, radio station license, transponder and ELT, plus a USCG-approved life vest for each person (a raft is recommended) [3] [11].
  4. CBP user fee decal: buy the annual private aircraft decal on DTOPS before your return flight [12].
  5. Outbound eAPIS: file on eAPIS at least 60 minutes before departure, and wait for CBP's email clearance [12] [13].
  6. Flight plan: file an ICAO flight plan, IFR or DVFR through the ADIZ [3].

Arriving at MYAT

  1. Land first at an airport of entry. MYAT is one. Calling ahead is recommended [3].
  2. Close your flight plan with Nassau Radio [11].
  3. Customs declaration (C7A) and cruising permit: use Bahamas Customs' Click2Clear Pleasure Aircraft module to fill in and pay for the C7A online, then have it stamped by an officer. Complete it within 24 hours of arrival. The paper alternative is a C7A in triplicate. Each person also needs an immigration card [14] [11].
  4. Fees: Bahamas Customs currently lists $150 for a recreational private aircraft (inbound only) and a $29 departure tax per passenger [14]. Older tourism pages show lower figures, and AOPA has flagged rising GA fees [15]. confirm before you fly

Heading back to the US

  1. Clear out of the Bahamas: outbound C7 declaration and departure tax [11] [14].
  2. Inbound eAPIS at least 60 minutes before you depart the Bahamas [13].
  3. Get explicit permission to land by calling the CBP port at your arrival airport before you depart [12].
  4. Land at a US airport of entry. South Florida options include KFPR, KPBI, KFXE, KFLL, KOPF, KTMB, KMIA and KEYW. Check each port's CBP GA fact sheet for hours and notice times [3] [16].
  5. Note: the CBP ROAM app is for pleasure boats (and a few seaplane bases), not for GA aircraft. Expect an in-person inspection [17].

Getting around

Treasure Cay Beach and the villas are roughly a 10-minute drive from MYAT (about 7 mi; one local guide quotes a 9-minute taxi ride) [2] [7]. There's no ride-hailing app here. Taxis are available at the airports, and local guides consistently advise reserving cars and carts ahead [7].

Most of these small businesses don't have websites, so the numbers below come from local Abaco listings (sources cited on each card). They change often: confirm before you fly

Local tips

Drive on the leftA valid US driver's license works for visits. Seatbelts are mandatory. Rural roads can be narrow and flood after rain [9].
Book wheels before you launchFleets are small. Call ahead for a car or cart so it's waiting when you shut down [7].
Bring cashAOPA advises carrying cash for fuel, because not every Bahamian airport takes cards. Some rental firms add a card surcharge [3] [19].
GroceriesTreasure Cay has a Mini-Mart for basics. For a full shop, stop in Marsh Harbour (Maxwell's is the big one) [21] [22]. confirm hours
Agree taxi fares firstBahamian taxi fares are zone-based, and extra passengers or luggage can add surcharges. Settle the fare before you leave [9].
Hurricane seasonJune 1–Nov 30. Keep your return plan flexible and watch the NHC.
